In the world of comic books, origin stories inform the reader of the identity and motivations of heroes and villains (thankfully, we only have the former here). Like Spider-Man or Captain America, your origin story is important as it defines who you are today. Learn about the experiences, people, and influences that shaped Concord's Kalyani Chigurupati by reading below!
I grew up in Vijayawada, a city in the southern part of India. After earning my master’s degree from Andhra University, I started my career as a software engineer and moved to the United States in 2009. Since then, I have been living in Chicago and raising my family here.
The celebration of the three-day Indian harvest festival, “Sankranti,” always falls on January 14th, 15th, and 16th. It is a time to express gratitude to Mother Earth and nature as winter begins to recede. Celebrations at my home start with waking up early, lighting a bonfire in the morning, cleaning the house, wearing new clothes, preparing special food, decorating the Pooja room, visiting the temple, sharing sweets with neighbors, enjoying a delicious family meal, flying kites, and caring for cattle by offering them fruits or greens. It’s so much fun for all three days!
In my life, I have many people who have been positive influences, but the ones who influenced me the most are my maternal and paternal grandfathers. One of them was even a freedom fighter. They sacrificed so much in their lives to make things better for my parents and for us. I grew up with them as a child, and they taught me the morals and values that I hold to a high standard even today. They showed me how to work hard, never give up, and always keep my head up. Growing up with such strong role models made me who I am today!
My favorite place in the world is Switzerland.
To be truthful, I feel that all my experiences have shaped my life, some for the better and some, perhaps, not so positively. Growing up in a middle-class family and losing my dad at the age of 9 taught me the importance of both people and money in life. Being surrounded by educated family members inspired me to study. Earning well in life taught me that money can buy comforts, but not happiness. Being raised by parents and grandparents who sacrificed everything for us made me a responsible parent.
Above all, being a mother has shaped me into what I am today more than anything else ever could.
I love Chicken Lollipop and Mirchi Bajji (a South Indian dish).
A combination of my hard work and passion! I've been loving every bit of it for the past 19 years!
I love early morning walks, cooking and hosting, and spending time with my kids!
Every time I lead and deliver projects that exceed goals and involve critical timelines.
Be yourself with confidence! Don’t be afraid to try new things! Do what makes you happy!
