Concord Origin Story: Kate Love
By Kate Huber

In the world of comic books, origin stories inform the reader of the identity and motivations of heroes and villains (thankfully, we only have the former here). Like Spider-Man or Captain America, your origin story is important as it defines who you are today. Learn about the experiences, people, and influences that shaped Concord's Kate Love by reading below!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the burbs of Richmond, Virginia. The good ‘ol south. I’m now raising my family here as well.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Does a favorite holiday count?! I love our Thanksgiving Day. My parents always host, and they make a killer spread. It’s always perfect fall weather here in Richmond, and the day is filled with throwing the football, swinging on my parents' massive swing hung high in a tree, playing in piles of leaves, and enjoying the scent, taste of amazing food, and delicious cocktails!

Who has had the greatest influence on your life?

My dad. He is a simple, loving man—regimented, grounded in faith, happy, healthy, and charitable. He instilled strong morals and values in his children, had a great career, and is now retired. He volunteers with the Special Olympics, traveling with athletes to different tournaments around Virginia. He also visits local retirement homes, sprucing up their gardens (he has a major green thumb), and builds beds for homeless children. He grows his own food (we get weekly vegetable deliveries!) and is the best grandpa ever.

What is your favorite travel destination?

My husband and I lived in San Francisco before we got married. I love going back, but not staying in the city—I prefer going either north or south of SF. To the south, there's Carmel, which may be my favorite place ever, but to the north, you have Marin and Sonoma. There are so many places to explore nearby. I love Northern California!

What’s an experience that shaped who you are today?

On that note, when we moved back East, we both quit our jobs and took a month to drive across the country, weaving north and south. We stayed in cool, quaint little towns and big, popular cities—vibey Airbnbs all along the way. It was amazing to experience everything the U.S. has to offer. You don’t have to go all the way to Europe to feel immersed in a completely new world!

What is your favorite food?

Tough, but I’m going with sushi on this one!

How did you end up in your current career?

I grew up being creative and loving to craft in some way, but I never thought I could make a career out of it. I always wanted to be a teacher, so that’s what I went to school for. Then, of course, when I graduated and entered the real world, I realized that wasn’t my path, and I wanted to pursue further schooling to do what I love. So, I enrolled in grad school in Atlanta, Georgia, for design and moved to California after graduating to start my new career. Six years later, here we are, and I’m loving every bit of it!

What is your favorite hobby?

I love to cook and host!

When was a moment where you felt most accomplished?

I won an award at the end of grad school that took me to London to receive it! It was really fun—I think that’s what helped me land my first job in the creative world, too. I basically went to London for the ceremony, then came back to Atlanta to pack my bags and head west for my first 'big girl job.' It was pretty back-to-back, which made it such an exciting time.

What advice would you give your younger self?

It’s. All. Going. To. Work. Out.
